He was born on 10 December 1878 in a Brahmin family of Salem District. He was an Indian Lawyer, Writer and a Statesman. He was elected as the Municipal Chairman of Salem and he held that post for two years. He was the second Governor-General of independent India. Later he became the Chief Minister of Madras State, and was one of the first recipients of India's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna (in 1954). He was even selected for the post of President of India but due to the infighting between the Congress party he opted to remain out. He also served as the union Home Minister. It was during this period that he warned Jawaharlal Nehru about the expansionist designs of China. He died on 25 December 1972.
